Salamanca
Salamanca is located in the West of Spain in the autonomous region of Castilla y León, very close to Portugal.
Salamanca is home to the oldest university of Spain, the Universidad de Salamanca, founded on 1218 by Alfonso IX of León. The university is also the first one in Europe that held the title of University by the edict of Alfonso X of Castilla and León in 1253 and the papal’s bull of Alejandro IV in 1255.
In 1988 the city was named by the UNESCO World Heritage. Salamanca possesses an important architectonic heritage where we have to point out the two cathedrals, the new and the old one, the Casa de las Conchas (shell’s house), the Plaza Mayor and the monastery of San Esteban. Since 2003, the Semana Santa (holy week) in Salamanca has been declared of international touristic interest.
How to get to the hostel
From the bus station (AVANZABUS):
Go out of the bus station and turn right into Avenida Filiberto Villalobos. GO straight until you reach the Paseo de San Vicente. Cross this street and walk down Ramón y Cajal Street, on your left you will see a park called San Francisco. Then you get to the square Monterrey and you will access the famous Plaza Mayor through Prior Street. Once you stand on the Plaza Mayor, take the first exit on your right which will lead you to Plaza del Corrillo. Go straight into the pedestrian street Rua Mayor and then the first street on your left. There we are: CALLE SANCHEZ BARBEO 7. It is very easy, basically all straight and then right and finally left!
From the train station (RENFE):
Go out of the train station and turn left. Walk down the Paseo de las Estaciones until you get to a big square, Plaza de España. On your right, take Calle Toro which is a commercial pedestrian that leads to Plaza Mayor. Cross it all straight and take the exit down some stairs that will lead you to the square called Poeta Iglesias. Just in front of you there is the street San Pablo, take it and the very first little street that is on your right is our street, CALLE SANCHEZ BARBERO 7. It is easy! See you there!!
By car:
With a car, you can get to Salamanca from Madrid and Avila (Highway / Autovía A-50), Cáceres and Béjar ( Autovía A-66), Portugal and Ciudad Rodrigo (Autovía A-62), Valladolid (Autovía A-62), Toro (C-519), Zamora (A-66).
Parking
Just come with your car right in front of the hostel, leave your luggage here and we will tell you the parking options. The car can be left at the hostel for 10-15 minutes.
If you prefer a private parking, the nearest is called Parking Colón and about 150 meters away. For the hostel’s guests there is a 3€ discount so you would need to pay 15€ for 24 hours.
The other option is to park the car on the street. The closest “white area” (free parking) is about 300 meters away from the hostel but once you left your luggage at the hostel, it is an easy 5-8 minutes walk.
